Painter Hans Hofmann was born in 1880 in Weissenburg in Bayern, Germany. He studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Colarossi, both in Paris, France. Hofmann has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, CA (1931); The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1963); The Fort Worth Art Museum, Fort Worth, TX (1985); Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau München, Munich, Germany (1997); University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley, CA (2014); and Musee Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, Kaiserslautern, Germany (2022). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Abstract and Surrealist Art in the United States, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA (1944); Art to Live with - A Collector's Show (Paintings), DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA (1954); American Art at Mid-century 1, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1973-74); Abstrakt: Der Deutsche Künstlerbund in Dresden 1993, Deutscher Künstlerbund, Berlin, Germany (1993); From Picasso to Pollock: Classics of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (2003); and Color Beyond Description: The Watercolors of Charles Hawthorne, Hans Hofmann, and Paul Resika, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Provincetown, MA (2019). Hofmann died in 1966 in New York, NY.
