Gaylen Gerber was born in 1955 in McAllen, TX. He received a BS in 1977 from State University of New York and his MFA in 1980 from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Gerber has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at the Study Center at New York University, New York, NY (1987); The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, Chicago, IL (1992); High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA (1998); Studio for Propositional Cinema, Dusseldorf, Germany (2015); and Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz, Austria (2016). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Art in Chicago: 1945-1995, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (1996); A Szin Onallo Elete/Color: A Life of Its Own, Mucsarnok, Kunsthalle Budapest, Budapest, Hungary (2002); The Lasting Concept, Portand Institute of Contemporary Art, Portland, OR (2016); and A Field Guide to Photography and Media, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL (2023). Gerber currently lives and works in Chicago, IL.
