Franz Gertsch

Biography

Printmaker and painter Franz Gertsch was born in 1930 in Mörigen, Switzerland. From 1947-50 he studied at Max von Mühlenen's Painting School in Bern, Switzerland. He has been the subject of various solo exhibitions, including at Museum Franz Gertsch, Burgdorf, Switzerland (2003); Ludwig Forum, Aachen, Germany; Albertina Museum, Vienna, Austria (both 2006); Museum Franz Gertsch, Burgdorf, Germany (2011); and Saarlandmuseum, Saarbrücken, Germany (2015). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Printed Art. A View of Two Decades, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1980); Holzschnitte und Malerei auf Papier, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Nagoya, Japan (1995); Hyperréalisme USA 1965-75, Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France (2003); Europop, Kunsthaus Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland (2008); and CAUboys. Kunst und Universität, Kunsthalle zu Kiel, Kiel, Germany (2015). Gertsch died in 2022 in Riggisberg, Switzerland.
