Artist Details
Firelei Báez was born in 1981 in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. She received her BFA in 2004 from Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, NY and her MFA in 2010 from Hunter College in New York, NY. Báez has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including Firelei Báez: Patterns of Resistance, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Salt Lake City, UT (2015); To See Beyond, Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati, OH (2018); Immersion into Compounded Time and The Paintings of Firelei Báez, Mennello Museum of American Art, Orlando, FL (2019); and Firelei Báez, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2021). She has also participated in several group exhibitions, including Wearing Spirit, Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, New York, NY (2010); Concealed: Selections from The Permanent Collection, The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY (2015); Driving Forces: Contemporary Art from the Collection of Ann and Ron Pizzuti, Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH (2019); and Artes Mundi 9, National Museum, Cardiff, Wales (2021). Báez currently lives and works in New York, NY.
