Biography

Sculptor Eva Hesse was born in 1936 in Hamburg, Germany. She studied at Yale University and the Cooper Union. Hesse has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the Allen Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (1972); The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC (1992); Tate Modern, London, UK (2002); Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2011); and Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin, OH (2022). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Drawings, The Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT (1961); Drawing, Painting and Sculpture from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection, Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH (1975); Bildlicht, Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna, Austria (1991); Sol LeWitt as a Collector. The artist and his artists, Centre Pompidou Metz, Paris, France (2013); and Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA (2023). Hesse died in 1970 in New York, NY.
