Enrique Chagoya was born in 1953 in Mexico City, Mexico. He received his BFA in 1984 from the San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, CA and his MFA in 1987 from University of California in Berkeley, CA. Chagoya has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at Alternative Museum, New York, NY (1989); M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco, CA (1994); Haggerty Museum of Art, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI (2013); and Legion of Honor Museum, San Francisco, CA (2021-22). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Artist’s Call Against U.S. Intervention in Central America, Mission Cultural Center, San Francisco, CA (1984); The Year of the White Bear, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN (1993); Singular Impressions, The Monotype in America, National Museum of American Art, The Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC (1997); The Legend of Bud Shark and His Indelible Ink, Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, CO (2009-10); and La Onda Chicana, Mattatuck Museum of Art, Waterbury, CT (2023). Chagoya currently lives and works in Stanford, CA.
