Emmet Gowin was born in 1941 in Danville, VA. He received his BFA in Graphic Design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1965 and his MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1967. Gowin has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1973); Photo Gallery International, Tokyo, Japan (1993); Mead Art Museum, Amherst, MA (2001); and The Morgan Library and Museum, New York, NY (2015).
