Emmet Gowin

Biography

Emmet Gowin was born in 1941 in Danville, VA. He received his BFA in Graphic Design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1965 and his MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1967. Gowin has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1973); Photo Gallery International, Tokyo, Japan (1993); Mead Art Museum, Amherst, MA (2001); and The Morgan Library and Museum, New York, NY (2015). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Photographs of Women, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1971); Highlights of the Alfred Stieglitz Center Collection of Photographs, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA (1993); The Model Wife, Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, CA (2000); Presumed Innocence: Photographic Perspectives of Children, DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, NE (2008); Landscapes of Extraction: The Art of Mining in the American West, Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ (2021); and Art on Hulfish, (opens in a new window) Traces on the Landscape, Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton, NJ (2023).
