Biography

Photographer Diane Arbus was born in 1923 in New York, NY. She studied photography with Lisette Model in New York from 1955-57. Arbus has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including New Documents, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1967); Diane Arbus: Magazine Work 1960-1971, Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, KS (1984); Diane Arbus: Revelations, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA (2003); Diane Arbus: American Portraits, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Australia (2016); and ARTIST ROOMS: Diane Arbus, Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum, Leamington Spa, England (2019). She has also participated in multiple group exhibitions, including Human Concern/Personal Torment: The Grotesque in American Art, Whitney Museum of Art, New York, NY (1969); The Presence of Walker Evans, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (1978); Kunstlerinnen des 20 Jahrhunderts, Museum Wiesbaden, Wiesbaden, Germany (1990); Cruel & Tender, Tate Modern, London, UK (2003); and Joan Didion: What She Means, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2022). Arbus died in 1971 in New York, NY.
