Artist Details


Artist, scholar, and curator David Driskell was born in 1931 in Eatonton, GA. He received his BFA in 1955 from Howard University and his MFA in 1962 from Catholic University of America, both located in Washington, DC. Driskell has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the Tennessee Fine Arts Center, Nashville, TN (1963); Amelia Wallace Gallery, SUNY College Old Westbury, NY (1989); Greenville County Museum of Art, SC (2008); and The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC (2021). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC; Knoxville Museum of Art, Knoxville, TN; Brooklyn Museum, New York, NY; and Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH. Driskell died in 2020 in Hyattsville, MD.
