Biography

Cynthia Carlson was born in 1942 in Chicago, IL. She received her BFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL and her MFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Carlson has been the subject of various solo exhibitions, including at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI (1982); The Queens Museum, Flushing, NY (1990); Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, Purchase, NY (1999); and Hunterdon Art Museum, Clinton, NJ (2024). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Twenty-Six Contemporary Women Artists, Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, CT (1971); War and Memory: In the Aftermath of Vietnam, Washington Project for the Arts, Washington, DC (1987); Soft Edge, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (2004); and Invisible City: Philadelphia and the Vernacular Avant-Garde, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA (2020). Carlson currently lives and works in New York, NY.
