Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, professionally known as Christo, was born in 1935 in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. In 1956 he graduated from the National Academy of Art in Sofia, Bulgaria. Christo met Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon in Paris in 1958, who would become his wife but also his artistic partner until her death in 2009.
Christo has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including Christo: Four Works in Progress, Stanford University Museum of Art, Stanford, CA (1989); Christo and Jeanne-Claude – Sammlung Würth, Künsthalle Würth, Schwäbisch Hall, Germany (2010), and Christo and Jeanne-Claude: L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Tokyo, Japan (2022).
