Chris Burden

Biography

Performance, sculpture, and installation artist Chris Burden was born in 1946 in Boston, MA. In 1969 he received his BFA from Pomona College in Claremont, CA and in 1971 his MFA from University of California in Irvine, CA. Burden has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH (1974); The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY (1991); Orange County Museum of Art, Costa Mesa, CA (2000); and Centro de Arte Contemporânea, Minas Gerais, Brazil (2011). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Body Movements, La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, CA (1971); Content: A Contemporary Focus, 1974-1984, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (1984); New Settlements, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, Copenhagen, Denmark (2001); and Climate Changing: On Artists, Institutions, and the Social Environment, Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH (2021). Burden died in 2015 in Topanga, CA.
