Artist Details
Painter Charles Burchfield was born in 1893 in Ashtabula, OH. He graduated in 1916 from the Cleveland School of Art in Cleveland, OH. Burchfield has been the subject of various solo exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1930); The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC (1933); Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA (1938); The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH (1953); and Ogunquit Museum of Art, Ogunquit, ME (1961). He has also participated in several group exhibitions, including Trois Siècles d’Art aux États-Unis, Musée du Jeu de Paume, Paris, France (1938); Art in Our Time, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1939); and American Painting from the 18th Century to the Present Day, Tate Gallery, London, UK (1946). Burchfield died in 1967 in West Seneca, NY.
