Photographer Berenice Abbott was born in 1898 in Springfield, OH. In 1918 she attended The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH for two semesters. Abbott traveled to Paris, France and studied sculpture under Emile Bourdelle in 1921. She has been the subject of various solo exhibitions, including Berenice Abbott: Portraits, MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA (2011); Berenice Abbott: Photographs, Groupis-Bau, Berlin, Germany (2016); Berenice Abbott’s New York Album, 1929, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY (2023). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Picturing Modernity, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA (2010); American Modern: Hopper to O'Keeffe, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2014); and Berenice Abbott, Florence Henri, Germaine Krull... The Amsab Collection: A Revelation, Museé des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle, Switzerland (2020). Abbott died in 1991 in Monson, ME.
