Artist Details

Biography

Artist, activist and educator Benny Andrews was born in 1930 in Plainview, GA. He received his BFA in 1958 from School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL. Andrews has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including Benny Andrews: Recent Oil Paintings, Paul Kessler Gallery, Provincetown, MA (1964); Benny Andrews/Matrix 42, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT (1978); The Art of Benny Andrews, Museum of African-American Art, Tampa, FL (1993); and Benny Andrews: Portraits, Real Person Before the Eyes, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, New York, NY (2021). He has also participated in various group exhibitions, including 150th Annual Exhibition of American Painting and Sculpture, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA (1960); America Drawn and Matched, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1977); Civil Progress: Images of Black America, Mary Ryan Gallery, New York, NY (1997); Evergreen: Art from the Collection, San José Museum of Art, San Jose, CA (2015); and True Believers: Benny Andrews & Deborah Roberts, McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX (2023). Andrews died in 2006 in Brooklyn, NY.
