Painter Ben Culwell was born in 1918 in San Antonio, TX. He has been the subject of various solo exhibitions, including at McNay Art Institute, San Antonio, TX (1977); Menial Collection, Houston, TX (1987); and Cultural Activities Center, Temple, TX (1989). He has also participated in many group exhibitions, including Fourteen Americans, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1946); Texas, 150 Works from Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX (2000); and Texas Modern: The Rediscovery of Early Texas Abstraction (1935–1965), Martin Museum of Art, Waco, TX (2007). Culwell died in 1992.
