Filmmaker, photographer and performance artist Bas Jan Ader was born in 1942 in Winschoten, Netherlands. He received a BFA in 1965 from Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA and an MFA in 1967 from the Claremont Graduate School and University Center, Claremont, CA. Ader has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including Bas Jan Ader, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (1988); Bas Jan Ader, Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, New York, NY (1994); and Search of the Miraculous: Thirty Years Later, Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporanea, Santiago de Compostela, Santiago, Spain (2010). Ader has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Pier + Ocean, Hayward Gallery, London, UK (1980); 1965-1975: Reconsidering the Object of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (1995); In and Out of Amsterdam, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2009); and Power and Imagination: Conceptual Art, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Australia (2018).
In 1975, Ader embarked on a sailing trip in the Atlantic Ocean. Six months after his departure, his sailboat was found off the coast of Ireland, but his body was never recovered.
