Painter Barkley L. Hendricks was born in 1945 in Philadelphia, PA. He received a BFA and MFA from Yale University. He has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY (1980); Lyman Allyn Museum of Art, New London, CT (2001); Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University, Durham, NC (2008-10); Rennie Museum, Vancouver, Canada (2020); and The Frick Collection, New York, NY (2023-24). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at the National Academy of Design, New York, NY (1970); Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA (1995); The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC (1999); Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA (2006-07); Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA (2015); and Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University, Durham, NC (2023). Hendricks died in 2017 in New London, CT.
