Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, known as Balthus, was born in 1908 in Paris, France. He was and continues to be the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including Balthus, The Musuem of Modern Art, New York, NY (1956); Balthus: A Retospective Exhibition, Tate Gallery, London, UK (1980); Balthus à la Villa Médicis, Villa Medici, Rome, Italy (1990); and Balthus, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain (2009). He was also included in various group exhibitions, including Exposition Minotaure, Palais des Beau Arts, Brussels, Belgium (1934); A New Spirit in Painting, Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (1981); Matisse and Balthus: Works on Paper, The Elkon Gallery, Inc., New York, NY (1998); An Exhibition for Notre Dame, Gagosian, Paris, France (2019).Balthus died in Rossinière, Switzerland in 2001.
