Avigdor Arikha was born in 1929 in Rădăuți, Romania. From 1949 to 1951, he studied at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Arikha has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including Paintings, Drawings, Woodcuts, The Bezalel National Museum, Jerusalem, Israel (1953); Dessins 1965-70, Centre National d'Art Contemporain, Paris, France (1970); Avigdor Arikha, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, UK (1999); Arikha, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain (2008); and Avigdor Arikha: A Breath, Benaki Museum, Athens, Greece (2019). He has also participated in many group exhibitions, including Art Israel, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1964); Drawings 1974-1984, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C (1984); The Portrait Now, National Portrait Gallery, London, UK (1993); and Doodle & Disegno, Blain, Berlin, Germany (2018). Arikha died in 2010 in Paris, France.
