Ashley Bickerton

Biography

Ashley Bickerton was born in 1959 in Barbados Island, Barbados. She received her BFA in 1982 from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA and studied in 1985 at the Whitney Museum Independent Studies Program in New York, NY. She has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at Artists Space, New York, NY (1984); Palacete del Embarcadero, Autoridad Portuaria de Santander, Spain (1997); Studiolo, Zurich. Switzerland (2013); and Susie’s Mother Tongue. Gagosian, West 21st Street, New York, NY (2023). Bickerton has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Objects in Collision, The Kitchen, New York, NY (1985); Mind over Matter: Concept and Object, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1990); Surroundings: Responses to the American Landscape, San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA (1999); and di sini, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara, Jakarta, Indonesia (2023). Bickerton died in 2022 in Bali, Indonesia.
