"This exhibition shows how Klee and Arp took up Kandinsky's early rythmic order of abstractions as a base for their personal fantasies, to be translated further by younger abstract surrealists such as Masson and Miro. Some painters have employed one approach and then another, as in the case of Klee; some have combined them in a single picture as Kandinsky occasionally has done. These paintings give a glimpse of the rich variety to be found in the work of the abstractionists" (James Johnson Sweeney, Variety in Abstraction).
