" . . . this exhibition . . . stresses the young and active - and in some cases not yet widely known - artists of the country whose work may be described as abstract or surrealist, in their production of the last few years, accompanied by a group of their more significat American forerunners and by recent works of European exponents of these same movements now resident here . . . Examples have been selected by Mr. Sidney Janis, who has been collecting information in this field in preparation for a forthcoming book to have a title similar to that of the exhibition" (Foreward, Abstract and Surrealist Art in the United States).
