Biography

Painter Helen Frankenthaler was born in 1928 in Manhattan, NY. She attended Bennington College, Bennington, VT. Frankenthaler has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at The Jewish Museum, New York, NY (1960); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (1985); Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX (1998); Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY (2015); and The Tate Modern, London, UK (2019). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Recent American Acquisitions, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1957); Prints 1960–1970: Selections from the Collection, National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC (1984); Four American Painters: Frankenthaler, Noland, Olitski, Poons, The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK (1998); The Changing Soil: Contemporary Landscape Painting,Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Nagoya, Japan (2010); and The Water Lilies: American Abstract Art and the Last Monet, Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris, France (2018). Frankenthaler died in 2011 in Darien, CT.
