Artist Details

Biography

Alexander Calder was born in 1898 in Lawnton, PA. In 1919 he graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. Calder also studied at the Art Students League in New York, NY and Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, France. He has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1943); Musee National d'Art Moderne, Paris, France (1978); Nagoya City Art Museum, Nagoya, Japan (2002); and The National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC (2011). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Retrospective, Tate Gallery, London, UK (1962); and Dynamo Un Siecle De Lumiere Et De Mouvement Dans L’art 1913-2013, Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, France (2013). Calder died in 1976 in New York, NY.
